Challenges presented

  • Removal of 45,000M³ of mud-stone to -14.5CD
  • Disposal site 12NM East of Teesport Port during winter conditions
  • Removal of existing material against pre-installed steep Sheet piles at -14CD

Having successfully completed Phase 1 of a 3 Phase contract Mc Laughlin & Harvey progressed to the Second Phase of the Teesport Harbour Development. The project consisted of replacing the existing quay deck and piles as well as reducing the berthing pocked by 4m to a depth of -14.5CD.\

The design dredge pocket, had a footprint of 245M X 55M and depth of -14.5CD to allow a larger range of vessels to remain at the berth during all tidal conditions. Due to the scale of the dredge footprint area of 13,475M². Foyle & Marine conducted Trailer Suction Dredging across the area to remove the top layer of soft material to expose the harder mud stone.

The dredging operation was conducted with a 30M out-reach Hitachi Ex1200 which was supported by a 30M X 12.5M sectional pontoon. The material was transported in 2No 450M³ split hopper barges which were managed by Foyle & Marine 18T bollard pull M.T Tregeagle.\

The removal of hard material required alternative attachments throughout various locations in the dredge pocket. 50- 60% of the area required the ripper tooth prior to excavation with a conventional toothed bucket. A rock wheel was also essential to loosen the hardened material between the new fender line and steel sheet piles before it could be excavated.

All dredging operations were conducted inside the extremely busy Teesdock which can have up to 10 ship movements daily.
