Stromness Harbour
Orkney council intro engaged BAM Nuttall / Foyle & Marine Dredging for further dredging works within the existing Stromness harbour. The dredging requirement consisted of the removal of 6,500M³ of soft material which was spread over harbour’s North, Middle and southern basin.
Challenge presented on this project
- Manoeuvring the Aoibheanne and the hopper barge inside the confined harbour basins
- Preserving the existing harbour stone walls
- Ensuring we maintain a safe working distance from the harbour wall to prevent undermining
Forward planning and notification was the key factor to causing minimal disruption to the harbour operators during the recreational dive season. Foyle & Marine established and maintained a secure line of communication between the RNLI and harbour master to ensure the lift boat and other vessels had assessed throughout the works. All marine material was disposed of at the licenced disposal facility 4NM west of Stromness Harbour.
